BACKGROUNDAt PayPal, every new feature or market launch goes through a Product Change Review (PCR) process to identify potential risks and prevent compliance issues, financial losses, and customer harms. We build a system to support this process.

The initial and key step of this process is for the product manager to fill out an “Intake Questionnaire” to indicate potential risks. However, with our first lunch, the system doesn’t quite solve the problem for product managers to complete this step.

PROBLEM
According to our evaluation, product managers feel lack of knowledge to complete the “Intake Questionnaire”. It takes up to 7 days on average to finish, and ineffective answers further delay the product launch process.

SOLUTIONCreating accurate and user-friendly explanations requires collaboration across multiple teams, but the necessary support is unavailable. We decide to leverage AI to deliver content.

DESIGN

Design for user control
  • While providing a concise AI-generated in-context explanation, allow users to request additional information in chat

  • Provide 3 answering options
    • AI-generated based on project documentations
    • AI-generated based on recommended reference (aligned with current practice, but in a more reliable way)
    • Manual Entry

  • Allow user edits to refine AI-generated responses

Design for transparency
  • Display reasoning behind AI-generated answers to build trust
